[PConline News] Memory prices are skyrocketing, SSD prices have seen counterfeit products becoming harder to purchase, and now the graphics card market is joining the chaos. You guessed it—graphics cards are also in short supply! Mining may no longer be as lucrative as before, but the graphics card shortage remains severe.
To put this into perspective, from April to mid-July this year, the mining craze drove an unprecedented demand for graphics cards. This created a surge in the market, causing shortages and fluctuations in prices for popular models. As the mining boom cooled down, the supply of graphics cards seemed to stabilize. However, just when things were looking up, the memory shortage has reignited concerns about another potential price hike.
The AMD RX Vega series has been launched and is making waves. However, the top-tier Vega 64 and the newer Vega 56 models are proving hard to come by, with availability being extremely limited. Reports suggest that issues with the GPU cores and the integrated HBM2 memory packaging have caused production bottlenecks, resulting in insufficient output.
According to the latest report from Digitimes, not only is AMD’s RX Vega lineup experiencing supply constraints, but NVIDIA’s GTX 10 series is also grappling with similar challenges. The primary bottleneck here is the global shortage of GDDR5 memory across the entire supply chain.
The report indicates that starting this month, NVIDIA’s entire range of graphics cards is likely to see price hikes, ranging from high-end models like the GTX 1080 Ti and GTX 1080, down to more mid-range offerings such as the GTX 1070, GTX 1060, and GTX 1050. Prices are expected to rise by 3-10%.
It’s worth noting that Samsung and SK Hynix have reduced their supply of GDDR5 memory for discrete graphics cards. The cost of these memory chips has surged from $6.5 in July to $8.5, representing an increase of up to 30.8%.
In addition, both memory suppliers have prioritized their production capacities for servers and mobile devices, which has further exacerbated the scarcity and driven up prices. This situation is likely to persist for some time, leaving gamers and enthusiasts in a challenging position.
As we look ahead, the semiconductor industry is bracing for what could be another wave of price volatility. While the mining craze may have cooled, the ripple effects on the broader hardware ecosystem are far from over. Stay tuned for updates as the situation unfolds!
