Before using a wireless microphone, it is essential to perform a thorough check to ensure everything is in working order. The operator should carefully inspect the system, properly connect all components, and set up the antenna correctly to avoid any issues during the performance. Here are some key points to consider:
First, make sure the battery compartment is securely closed and that the batteries have sufficient power. Next, turn on the receiver first and check the RF meter to confirm there is no interference on the selected channel before powering on the transmitter. Always verify that the mute switch on the microphone is off so that the transmitter and microphone remain active throughout the performance.
The waistband transmitter should be hung properly on the belt, avoiding any sagging or bending due to gravity, which could affect signal transmission. Also, keep the transmitter away from direct skin contact, as sweat from performers can interfere with the device's operation. Avoid touching the transmitter with metal objects like keys or belt buckles, as this may cause frequency deviation. Additionally, do not stack receivers together, as this can lead to internal interference.
During the performance, constantly monitor the RF signal indicator to detect any external interference. When passing the microphone between performers, avoid placing multiple active microphones together or near the receiving antenna, as this can create intermodulation interference. If you hear noise, check if the microphone capsule is properly installed, if the sensitivity setting is too high, or if the current frequency is being disturbed.
Common sources of interference include mobile phones, walkie-talkies, and cordless phones. In such cases, switching to a different frequency is recommended. When changing frequencies, always adjust the receiver first to find a clear channel before changing the transmitter’s frequency.
If the venue has poor reception due to obstacles like pillars, metal structures, or glass, or if the sound control room is far away, consider using a diversity system with two antennas for better coverage. Adjusting the antenna position or angle can also help improve signal strength. In extreme cases, extend the antenna using a video cable (10–15 meters) and place it in an area with stronger signal reception.
Finally, when replacing the battery during use, always turn off the microphone first, replace the battery, and then turn the microphone back on to prevent any power interruptions. Taking these precautions will help ensure smooth and uninterrupted audio during the performance.
