What is distortion?
Distortion occurs when a signal changes from its original form during transmission or processing. In an ideal amplifier, the output should be a perfect scaled version of the input, without any changes in shape or characteristics. However, in real-world systems, the output often differs from the input due to various factors. This deviation is known as distortion. Distortion can take several forms. One common type is amplitude distortion, which happens when different parts of the signal are amplified by different amounts. This typically results from nonlinear behavior in the system. Another type is frequency distortion, which occurs when different frequency components of the signal are amplified unevenly. Lastly, phase distortion, also referred to as delay distortion, happens when different frequencies experience different time delays during amplification. Amplitude distortion is generally considered a form of nonlinear distortion, while frequency and phase distortions are classified as linear distortions. Understanding these types of distortion is essential for designing and optimizing communication systems, audio equipment, and signal processing circuits to ensure high-quality signal transmission and reproduction.
