The STi7167 enables equipment manufacturers to create entry-level 'zapper' set-top boxes with fewer components, saving material and assembly costs. Because the STi7167 can receive Internet TV, cable or terrestrial TV signals, device manufacturers no longer have to manufacture multiple models for different broadcast formats, which can further save costs. The on-chip integrated H.264/MPEG 2 decoder is identical in design to ST's STi7105 stand-alone decoder. In addition, to increase application flexibility and reduce product cost, on-chip user-selectable DVB-C and DVB-T demodulators are integrated. As a result, product developers can use existing STi7105-based set-top box software for STi7167-based set-top boxes to reduce zapper set-top box development and technical support costs and reduce time-to-market.
Designers can use the STi7167 family to develop lower power product designs. For example, the STi7167's passive standby power consumption is less than 200mW, so designing a set-top box with a standby power consumption of less than 1 watt is not difficult.
In addition to the STi7167 with HD decoding, STMicroelectronics also announced a standard-definition (SD) set-top box demodulator and decoder combo chip STi5267. The pins of the two products are compatible with each other. Equipment manufacturers can design SD and HD products to share the platform and achieve greater economic benefits. Set-top boxes based on the STi7167 or STi7105 decoder or similar STi5205 standard-definition decoder can share software for further cost savings.
The STi7167 is available now in a 27mm x 27mm BGA package.
