Earlier, VR reported that Pinta Studios officially released the final poster for their VR animation "The Dream of the Elderly." The new poster offers a fresh hint about the story's direction. In the image, an old man is sitting on a massive, unopened transparent gift box. Inside, you can see a variety of small, neatly packed boxes arranged in a seemingly random order. According to the team, this scene is closely tied to the final stage after the old man "collects dreams" and "renews them."
"The Old Man Who Picks Up Dreams" follows the journey of an elderly man who collects discarded items and raises a puppy. He searches through a massive garbage dump for the forgotten dreams of people. The film was nominated for the International VR/AR Story Film Festival (FIVARS) VR Competition and the Future of Storytelling VR (FoST) Theater Screening. It also became the only Chinese VR animation showcased at the 2017 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
After its successful premiere at the 74th Venice Film Festival, "The Old Man Who Picks Up Dreams" is now available to domestic audiences on September 13. The creative team shared that the work not only highlights the value of holding onto one's dream but also explores the meaning and legacy of dreams in today’s world.
The script for "The Dreaming Old Man" was written by director Miriam during her college years. She shared, "Everyone has the right to make choices in life. When I graduated, many of my classmates abandoned their passion for animation and chose more stable careers. A dream might return unexpectedly and find a new way to 'realize' itself."
When asked why they chose this particular script as their first project, director Rice explained, "We wanted our first story to reflect the essence of Pinta Studios. At that time, Ray and I, along with Yunmeng, felt that this story had the potential to connect with people on a deep emotional level."
The film does not feature any dialogue or lines. Producer Lei Xiaomeng explained, "We wanted to tell a story that everyone could understand. The old man’s emotions are conveyed through his actions and expressions rather than words."
Unlike traditional films, VR allows for a more immersive experience. The creators built a fantasy world within the virtual space. Lei Mengmeng said, "Visually, you can freely look around in a 360-degree environment, just like you do in real life. For example, in 'The Old Man Who Picks Up Dreams,' you can explore the elderly man's home. Auditory elements are also designed to be directional — you can tell where the dog is running based on the sound. With VR headsets, you can move around and interact with the scenes, getting up close to the old man’s workshop to watch the story unfold in real-time."
Since being announced as a nominee for the 74th Venice Film Festival, "The Old Man Who Picks Up Dreams" has attracted widespread attention. One of the most frequently asked questions is, "Where can I watch it?" Pinta Studios’ CMO, Zhai, confirmed that the film will be released as a 360-degree video. "You can watch it through various VR apps on your phone. With the growing popularity of VR, you can easily search and download it from app stores. You can also watch it directly on your phone without special VR glasses, although using a VR headset will provide a better experience."
According to VR Network, the film will also be available on mainstream PC VR headsets such as HTC Vive and Oculus. Viewers will be able to experience "The Old Man Who Picks Up Dreams" in real-time, enjoying an immersive audiovisual experience with 360-degree visuals and spatial sound.
