Screaming to drive the TV out of the living room? Don't make a fuss, it's still early!

In 1924, the world’s first television was introduced. Four years later, the Belle C-type TV became the first mass-produced television model. Since then, televisions have transformed people's lives, access to information, and even their way of thinking. Over time, they have become the central hub for entertainment and news in most households. Many of us, including myself, learned from TV that the Earth is round, that Hollywood and Disney are famous globally, and that people all over the world can watch the same content at the same time. TV has always been more than just a screen—it's a window into the world. However, with the rise of the internet and the increasing influence of computers and smartphones, the role of TV in the home has gradually diminished. Once the heart of the living room, it now often sits as an occasional decoration. Some say TV has become a burden, even pushed out of the main space of the house. But maybe it's too early to write off the TV just yet. Game consoles, for example, have made a big comeback in China. Would you ask me to throw them away? From the early days of FC and Sega to modern PlayStation and Xbox, TVs have always been the main platform for gaming. The experience of playing games on a large screen is something that mobile devices or computers can't fully match. In 2015, after being banned for 15 years, the console market in China finally opened up. Sony PS4, Microsoft Xbox One, and local manufacturers began entering the scene. Although their market performance hasn’t been stellar, the growing number of gamers shows potential for future growth. In my view, as the gaming industry becomes more significant and regulations improve, the console game market in China will grow. And since TVs are essential for console gaming, they won’t be easily replaced. In fact, high-end TVs designed for gaming will likely attract more attention from players seeking a better experience. Beyond gaming and watching shows, I can’t think of many ways to bring the family together. With phones and computers, we can get information anytime, anywhere, and watch our favorite shows on any device. But this also means less face-to-face interaction between family members. In my family, coming together to watch TV and discuss what we see is a relaxing and meaningful activity. Without a TV, the only thing that brings us together might just be meals. Among my friends, many still turn on the TV when they get home. They may not watch it intently, but it adds life to the house. One friend, whom I’ll call A, even turns on the TV while playing computer games. “We don’t live with our parents anymore,” he says. “It’s hard to find common topics when we play games alone. But when the TV is on, there’s always something to talk about. It keeps the atmosphere warm and lively.” When asked if he feels like it’s a waste of electricity, he replies, “It’s worth it. It makes the home feel alive.” This kind of social need is something everyone experiences. Shared screen time creates a unique family bonding moment. With the rise of smart TVs and internet-connected devices, watching shows online is no longer exclusive to phones or computers. TVs offer better picture quality and sound, making them ideal for live events. More people prefer watching live broadcasts on TV rather than through web streams. Looking ahead, TV may become the gateway to the smart home. Can we really give that up? While the internet has changed how we use TV, it has also created new opportunities. As the Internet of Things becomes more advanced, smart homes will become a reality. TVs, with their large screens and intuitive control, are well-suited to be the central interface. Unlike smartphones, they reach a wider age group and offer a more natural way to interact with home systems. Imagine coming home, changing into comfortable clothes, and using your TV to control every smart device in your house—no need to pull out your phone and open multiple apps. That’s a realistic and convenient future. Even though it may take time to fully develop, when the user experience improves, smart TVs will likely become the preferred choice. After all, TVs provide more immersive and everyday scenes that mobile devices simply can’t match. That’s why we can’t imagine life without them.
