Zhejiang University's first arm embedded artificial intelligence algorithm contest

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence algorithms and computing power, AI applications in cloud and server environments have seen significant growth. However, AI on embedded platforms faces more demanding operational conditions and stricter real-time requirements, which pose greater challenges for algorithm design. Looking ahead, we envision a future where every device around us is smart and intuitive, making local AI as simple and convenient to use as a toothbrush. The era of embedded artificial intelligence may arrive sooner than expected. Recently, the "OPEN AI LAB," an open AI laboratory jointly established by three leading AI hardware and algorithm companies, was launched. This initiative marks a major step forward in the field. Zhejiang University hosted the first Arm Embedded AI Algorithm Contest, organized by the Arm Club. The competition is now open for registration, and details are being shared with students across the university. This contest focuses on the most popular Arm embedded platform and common AI application scenarios. It encourages students to creatively design or improve existing algorithms to achieve better performance. The final results will be uploaded to GitHub, promoting the development of open-source embedded AI algorithms. The competition includes three categories: Face Recognition, Human Tracking, and Gesture Recognition. Each category is evaluated separately, with detailed rules outlined in the competition guidelines. **Face Recognition**: Participants must identify three faces in scenes like a school playground or classroom, with distances ranging from 1 to 3 meters. The target performance is 24 frames per second. **Human Tracking**: The task involves tracking a single person at a distance of 3 to 10 meters, moving at walking speed. The team with the highest number of recognized frames wins. **Gesture Recognition**: Competitors must recognize five custom gestures. The winner is determined by the highest frame recognition count. The prize pool totals over 90,000 yuan, with two awards in each category. Winning teams will receive development boards and other rewards. The competition features a structured timeline, including a launch event, registration period, mid-term review, and finals. The hardware platform provided is the Firefly3399, featuring four Arm Cortex-A53 cores, two Cortex-A72 cores, and a Mali T860 GPU. Software support includes Linux/Ubuntu, CaffeOnACL, and MxnetOnACL, available through official links and GitHub. Participants can register individually or in teams of up to three members. All Zhejiang University students are welcome, regardless of academic level. The competition encourages both deep learning and non-deep learning approaches, but strongly supports the use of deep learning techniques. To participate, interested individuals should download the registration form from the event's website and submit it via email.
