Good friends, this is Wang Feng. Last time I spoke with the headset on, I was really excited to connect with everyone. This year has been incredibly busy, but here I am finally meeting with you today to continue our discussion on headphones.
As someone deeply involved in the music industry, I use headphones quite frequently. Personally, I too am a headphone enthusiast. Over the past couple of years, I've noticed that people's demands for headphones are constantly evolving. Initially, comfort might have been the primary concern, but now, features like active noise cancellation, 3D surround sound, and even artificial intelligence integration have become essential aspects of modern headphones. Wireless headphones were revolutionary when they first came out, and today Bluetooth technology is incredibly advanced. Today, I want to talk to you about wireless headphones.

Wireless headphones have come a long way since Bluetooth technology was first introduced. We’ve seen button-operated headsets that made taking calls more convenient. Now, I want to focus on true wireless headphones.
Today, wireless has become a necessity in our lives. We crave convenience, and our homes are already filled with wireless devices. Wireless headphones can enhance our overall listening experience.
Do you remember all the frustrations you had with wired headphones?

When I first started using wireless products, I was put off by the complexity of their operations. However, once I tried wireless headphones, I realized it was an irreversible shift. Just like how once you start using Wi-Fi, you never want to return to the days of Ethernet cables. This can be summed up in one sentence:
"I want to be as free as a dream."
The FIIL headset brand has made significant efforts in wireless technology. All their products are wireless, offering convenience whether you're working out or just living your life. Everyone knows that Bluetooth transmission can lead to some sound quality loss. During the research and development phase, I tasked our engineers with solving this issue.

True Wireless Headphones:
Apple’s AirPods were groundbreaking with their true wireless design, replacing the physical connection between the earbuds with wireless transmission. By integrating the underlying Bluetooth technology and chips, they managed to transmit sound between the two earbuds without losing quality. This is the direction we’re aiming for in the future.

Sound Quality of Wireless Headphones:
Wireless headphones often get a bad reputation for sound quality.
There are several factors that determine sound quality, including the music file, playback equipment, transmission method, and speaker units. If all other factors are equal, the transmission method plays a huge role in determining sound quality.

Due to the limited bandwidth of Bluetooth transmission, large high-definition files cannot be transmitted directly. If forced...

So compression is necessary to make the files smaller. The final sound quality depends on the codec technology used for compression.
Currently, there are three main codec technologies for Bluetooth transmission: SBC, AAC, and aptX.

SBC: All Bluetooth products support SBC. Due to significant compression loss, its sound quality is the worst among the three codecs. It is mainly suited for Bluetooth calls. Older earphones used this method, leading to people perceiving wireless headphones as having poor sound quality.
AAC: Advanced Audio Coding, which uses a new encoding algorithm, is more efficient. It maintains sound quality without much reduction while being more suitable for Bluetooth transmission.
aptX: As music file sizes increase, the demand for compression rises. CSR introduced aptX technology, allowing audio to maintain high quality even when compressed, reaching CD-level standards.

The order of sound quality among the three mainstream codecs is aptX > AAC > SBC. In an aptX vs. SBC test, you can see that SBC (red) has more distortion, while aptX maintains a stable curve.

When purchasing headphones, check what codec technology the headset supports. Also, remember that Bluetooth is a communication between two devices. Both devices need to support the same technology to work properly. Currently, Apple devices use AAC, while some Android phones support aptX.
Battery Life of Wireless Headphones:
The battery life of headphones determines how often they need to be charged. No one wants to charge their headphones as frequently as their smartphone. Therefore, the longer the battery life, the better.

Battery life parameters can be categorized as follows:
Continuous Play Time: This determines how long you can listen before needing to charge again. The industry standard is to test with all other functions turned off (like noise cancellation). The data is obtained by testing mid-volume levels. Actual usage varies from person to person, so the real-life battery life may differ from the stated figures.
Standby Time: A sufficient amount of power should last several days without needing a recharge. Insufficient standby time leads to frequent recharging.
Charging Speed: When your headphones die and you need to rush to use them, a fast charging speed is essential.
The endurance of headphones is influenced by various factors like volume level, battery capacity, and optimization technology. Hence, battery life can vary greatly between different models. Generally, sports headphones last around 4-10 hours, while regular headphones can last 15-30 hours.
Transmission Performance of Wireless Headphones:
Bluetooth transmission performance includes connection stability, interference resistance, and transmission distance. Since the human body can interfere with Bluetooth signals, poorly designed headphones may experience interruptions depending on which side they are worn on.

This is an antenna design test during the R&D process of headphones. Our RF engineer explained to me that this involves:
Selecting the most suitable antenna type and optimizing its shape
Finding the best spatial location
Overall system design to avoid electromagnetic interference or harmful signal reflections and shielding
Matching the antenna's impedance network with the entire RF system to maximize energy conversion efficiency
While this might sound complex, in simpler terms, small changes in location or shape can drastically affect signal performance. To achieve maximum efficiency, continuous testing and adjustments are necessary.
Transmission performance is hard to quantify with straightforward data. Here's a simple test method:
1. Wear the headphones and test the phone from different positions like the left pocket, right pocket, and backpack to see if there’s any change in sound quality or connection stability.
2. Place the phone a bit further away (3-5 meters) and test the headphones with the phone in front and behind.

After years of development, wireless headphones have become reliable for daily use. Features like noise cancellation and smart applications have opened up endless possibilities. Freedom is a deep desire within us. Through this sharing, I hope everyone can enjoy music more freely. That concludes my sharing. Thank you for reading.
