Talk about OSRAM LED backlight quantum color conversion technology

Osram Opto Semiconductors recently announced the introduction of quantum color conversion technology, which the company claims will create a new standard for TV display LED backlighting. Compared to quantum dot test strip technology, OSRAM's quantum color conversion technology provides better color space coverage and cost savings.

For many years, leading TV manufacturers have been demanding a broader color space. The TV standard is once again turning to ultra-high-definition larger-color triangles, and quantum color is precisely the standard. Initial customer projects are in progress, and OSRAM's technology is scheduled to launch the LED backlight market by the end of 2016.

Quantum color is based on a green quantum converter that combines a red phosphor on a blue chip. The technology development is part of the SSL4EU and Hi-Q-LED projects funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which does not require any cadmium.

Quantum dot test strips with high quality color rendering index of TV backlights have many advantages. Since the full width at half maximum (FWHM) is only a narrow green peak of 30 nm, quantum color provides better color space coverage. The DCI isochromatic space standard can cover 100%, and the REC2020 can cover more than 80%. More importantly, OSRAM's technology does not require systems and any other components to accommodate the simplified production process and the entire system.

Unlike quantum dot test strip solutions, this semiconductor particle-based technology measures only a few nanometers and can be halved.

Another advantage of this technology is that the color is constant over the life of the LED. As time goes by, the quantum dot test strips will be bluish. In terms of lifetime, the quantum color LED has a lifetime of 30,000 hours, and preliminary tests have achieved positive results.
