In a bid to enhance collaboration with leading enterprises in the automotive manufacturing, battery production, public transportation, and recycling sectors, China Tower Corporation has recently entered into a partnership agreement with several key companies, including Chongqing Chang'an, BYD, Yinlong New Energy, Ma, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, and Thornton New Energy. The initiative aims to address the environmental challenges posed by the disposal of power batteries from new energy vehicles.
The "dismantling specification" for new energy vehicle batteries was officially released in May 2017 and is expected to be implemented soon. According to data from the Ministry of Science and Technology, China's new energy vehicle fleet surpassed one million units by 2017, making up 50% of the world's total. With a typical battery lifespan of 5 to 8 years, many of these vehicles are now approaching the stage where battery recycling will become necessary.
Currently, concerns about battery pollution from new energy vehicles are growing. However, China lacks a fully developed system that ensures smooth coordination between automakers and battery recyclers. The battery recovery project led by China Tower Corporation seeks to establish standardized procedures for the entire lifecycle of batteries—manufacturing, recycling, and secondary use—to effectively tackle the issue of pollution.
Since early 2015, China Tower has set up 57 decommissioned battery demonstration sites across nine provinces and cities, including Heilongjiang and Tianjin. These sites have served as testing grounds for the reuse of spent power batteries. The project has since expanded to 12 provinces, with over 3,000 test sites established nationwide.
This collaborative effort marks an important step forward in managing the environmental impact of the rapidly growing new energy vehicle industry. By promoting sustainable practices and creating a structured recycling framework, China is taking proactive measures to ensure long-term ecological balance and resource efficiency.
