The self-clearance customs clearance of 10 seconds to get the robot answering question Hangzhou port has more and more "international standard"

In a recent update, the Hangzhou Border Inspection Station has made headlines with its growing role in international travel. As the city's global influence expands, so does the traffic through its port. In 2017, the station processed over 4.75 million passengers and more than 30,000 outbound flights, securing its position as China’s fifth-largest entry and exit airport after Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu. Looking ahead, the station is preparing to implement a “24-hour clearance” system, ensuring that staff will be available around the clock to handle passenger flows regardless of flight schedules. Currently, officers work from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., aligning with flight operations. With the new system, they will remain on duty at all times, offering continuous service. Zhu Yi, the chief of staff, noted that in 2000, the number of travelers was just around 200,000. Since then, the numbers have grown significantly. The expansion of air routes and increased international connectivity have driven this growth. Now, the station handles immigration for over 30 countries across four continents, with 80% of the province’s immigration activity passing through Hangzhou. Cheng Zhi, an inspector with four years of experience, shared his perspective. He mentioned that during peak seasons like the Spring Festival, there are massive surges in passenger flow, especially for destinations like Thailand, Vietnam, and Turkey. To manage this, the team is already testing the 24-hour shift model. To improve efficiency, the station has introduced smart technology, including self-service channels, intelligent robots, and automated systems. These tools aim to speed up the process and reduce waiting times for travelers. Since the launch of the self-service channels at the end of 2016, the time required for customs clearance has been reduced to just 10 seconds. With three channels currently in operation, over 530,000 passengers used them in 2017, accounting for 40% of eligible travelers, mainly Chinese tourists with electronic passports or ID cards. The station plans to increase the number of self-service channels from 3 to 7 by the end of the month. This upgrade is expected to boost annual processing capacity to 170,000 passengers, equivalent to the work of three human officers. Eventually, over 1 million passengers could use the self-service lanes each year, meeting most entry requirements efficiently. One of the standout features is the intelligent robot “Amy,” which can interact with passengers, answer questions, and guide them through the process. Amy can also connect to 4G networks, play music, and perform videos or dances via an app. Its multilingual capabilities are being enhanced to provide better service to international travelers. With these advancements, the Hangzhou Border Inspection Station continues to evolve, making international travel smoother and more efficient for passengers from around the world.
