The surge in investment within China's display panel industry has been largely driven by the country's massive market size. Investors remain highly optimistic about the future of the sector, fueled by strong support from local governments, which provide a range of favorable policies related to land use and taxation. In the first half of 2017, the shipment volume of domestic LCD panels reached 31.82 million square meters, accounting for 33% of the global total. It was anticipated that China would become the world's top producer of LCD panels by 2019.
Beyond LCD technology, China is also making significant progress in the production of small and medium-sized AMOLED panels. According to foreign media reports, the annual production capacity of such panels from Chinese manufacturers is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 76%, reaching 11.31 million square meters by 2022. This would account for 33.4% of the global total, placing China second only to South Korea.
On October 26, 2017, BOE Chengdu announced the start of mass production on its Flexible AMOLED Sixth Generation Line. This marked China’s first flexible AMOLED production line and the world’s second-generation sixth-generation facility of its kind. The launch of this line broke Samsung's long-standing dominance in the small OLED market and signaled that more domestic mobile devices would soon feature OLED screens. By 2021, BOE's AMOLED production capacity was expected to surpass LG Display, making it the world’s second-largest supplier.
Currently, BOE supplies major brands such as Huawei, OPPO, VIVO, Xiaomi, ZTE, and Nubian. As the company continues to expand its production capabilities, it receives strong backing from local governments. By 2022, China's small-sized AMOLED panel production capacity is expected to reach 20% of the global total, positioning it as a key supplier to international smartphone manufacturers. With ongoing advancements and increased investments, China is steadily solidifying its position as a global leader in display technology.
