The surge in investment within China's display panel industry has been fueled by the country's massive market size. Investors are highly confident in the future of the panel sector, driven by strong government backing and a range of favorable policies in land use and taxation. In the first half of 2017, domestic LCD panel shipments reached 31.82 million square meters, making up 33% of the global total. By 2019, China was expected to lead the world in production capacity.
Beyond LCD panels, China is rapidly catching up in the production of small and medium-sized AMOLED panels. According to foreign media, Chinese manufacturers are projected to see a compound annual growth rate of 76% in their small- and medium-sized AMOLED production capacity, reaching 11.31 million square meters by 2022—accounting for 33.4% of the global total. This would place China second only to South Korea in this segment.
On October 26, 2017, BOE Chengdu launched its flexible AMOLED sixth-generation line, marking China’s first such facility and the world’s second-generation 6th generation flexible AMOLED line. This milestone broke Samsung’s long-standing dominance in the small OLED market and signaled that more Chinese smartphones would soon feature OLED displays. By 2021, BOE’s AMOLED production capacity was expected to surpass LG Display, becoming the world’s second-largest supplier.
Currently, BOE supplies major brands like Huawei, OPPO, VIVO, Xiaomi, ZTE, and Nubian. As the company continues to expand its production capabilities, it receives strong support from local governments. By 2022, China’s small-sized AMOLED panel production capacity is expected to reach 20% of the global total, making it a key supplier to international smartphone manufacturers. This growth reflects not only technological advancement but also a strategic shift in China’s position within the global display industry.
