Maxim launches compact dual-output crystal oscillator

Recently, Maxim introduced the DS4625 dual-output LVPECL crystal oscillator, designed for demanding communication systems. The device produces two high-frequency outputs in the 100MHz to 625MHz range, allowing designers to replace two discrete oscillators with a single device. The DS4625 is packaged in a 5mm x 3.2mm LCC, which is 55% smaller than the traditional solution (5mm x 7mm). The device has industry-leading jitter performance [<1.0psRMS (12kHz to 20MHz)], suitable for high current (95mA to 105mA, typical), high frequency (> 100MHz), differential output (LVPECL) applications. The DS4625 is ideal for communication systems that require high-performance clock signals such as Fibre Channel, Ethernet, 10G Ethernet, SONET / SDH, InfiniBand®, GPON, BPON, PCI Express®, and SAS / SATA.

Crystal oscillator

DS4625 solves the common heat dissipation problem of small and medium-sized ceramic packages in high-frequency, high-current design. The integrated heat dissipation pad provides an effective heat dissipation channel for the crystal, ensuring reliable operation in the temperature range of -40 ° C to + 70 ° C. The DS4625 is manufactured using fundamental frequency AT-cut crystal technology (no overtones), and the PLL-based low-noise oscillator is designed using Maxim ’s SiGe process. The entire design has an ultra-low aging rate of <± 7ppm (more than 10 years) and excellent frequency stability. The change caused by voltage, temperature, initial tolerance and aging is less than ± 50ppm. Compared with competing devices (such as SAW-based oscillator designs), the DS4625 can provide the same level of jitter performance in a smaller package size, and has better performance in a wider temperature range of -40 ° C to + 70 ° C. Stability (± 50ppm and ± 100ppm or greater, respectively).

Although the third harmonic oscillator design has stable phase jitter specifications and good temperature stability, as the package size and crystal size decrease, undesirable spurious components will appear. The spurious component is usually greatly affected by temperature, causing the frequency to deviate significantly from the required nominal value. In addition, the three-overtone design limits the maximum operating frequency to approximately 200MHz.

The DS4625 uses a reliable LC-PLL integrated circuit design and uses fundamental frequency AT-cut crystal technology, which will not produce spurious components that cause large frequency deviation. In addition, the PLL-based design can easily achieve an operating frequency of 622.08MHz or higher. The standard working frequency combination of DS4625 includes: 100 / 150MHz, 125 / 125MHz, 125 / 156.25MHz, 150 / 150MHz and 150 / 200MHz, or you can contact the factory to customize the working frequency.
