January 17 — According to a recent report by Yonhap News, Samsung Electronics, one of the world's leading television manufacturers, is set to launch a new TV model that will use LCD panels produced by its major competitor, LG Display. This marks a significant shift in the long-standing rivalry between the two South Korean tech giants.
It has been revealed that since last month, LG Display has officially started supplying 65-inch and 75-inch LCD panels to Samsung. While the initial cross-supply involved smaller 40-inch panels, Samsung had planned to expand its focus to larger sizes. The company now intends to prioritize 65- and 75-inch models in 2018. This move is notable because it represents the first time Samsung and LG have sourced components from each other for their television and display products.
Samsung and LG have historically been fierce competitors across various sectors, including smartphones, home appliances, and consumer electronics. Their collaboration on this occasion appears to have been driven by necessity, following a supply disruption caused by Sharp. In late 2016, Sharp unexpectedly announced that it would stop supplying LCD panels to Samsung, creating a critical shortage. Faced with this challenge, Samsung turned to LG for support, and LG’s timely assistance helped prevent a potential production crisis.
According to industry sources, Samsung is purchasing these panels from LG Display for its upcoming mid-range TV models. Although both companies have not officially commented on the reports, the development signals a rare but strategic partnership between two industry leaders.
