January 17 — According to a recent report by Yonhap News, Samsung Electronics, one of the world's leading television manufacturers, is set to launch a new TV model that will use LCD panels produced by its major competitor, LG Display. This marks a significant shift in the long-standing rivalry between the two South Korean tech giants.
It has been revealed that since last month, LG Display has officially started supplying 65-inch and 75-inch LCD panels to Samsung. While the initial cross-supply arrangement focused on 40-inch panels, Samsung later decided to prioritize larger sizes, with 2018 being the year it plans to heavily promote 65- and 75-inch models. This collaboration is particularly notable because it represents the first time that Samsung and LG have sourced components from each other for their TV and display products.
Historically, Samsung and LG have been fierce competitors across various sectors, including smartphones, home appliances, and consumer electronics. However, this partnership appears to have been driven in part by a critical situation involving Sharp. In late 2016, Sharp, a Japanese company, unexpectedly announced that it would stop supplying LCD panels to Samsung, creating a severe shortage for the South Korean giant. Faced with this challenge, Samsung turned to LG for support. LG’s decision to step in and provide the necessary panels not only helped Samsung avoid a potential production crisis but also demonstrated a rare moment of cooperation between the two rivals.
According to insiders, the panels supplied by LG Display are intended for Samsung’s upcoming mid-range TV models. While both companies have remained silent on the matter, the move signals a strategic shift in how they approach supply chain management. It also highlights the complex dynamics of the global electronics industry, where even longtime competitors can find themselves working together when circumstances demand it.
This development could signal a broader trend in the industry, where collaboration may become more common as companies seek to reduce dependency on single suppliers and enhance flexibility in their operations. For now, the partnership between Samsung and LG Display remains a quiet but meaningful example of how competition and cooperation can coexist in the high-stakes world of technology.
