In the current automotive market, the mini-car segment has seen a significant decline in popularity, with fewer consumers opting for small vehicles. The target audience for small hatchbacks is primarily young women, who use these cars for daily commuting and short trips.
Among the joint-venture hatchback models, the Polo and Fit are leading in sales, while the Vios FS also performs well. However, most other small hatchbacks struggle to achieve more than a few thousand units per month, with some even selling just hundreds of vehicles.
Hatchbacks are generally more agile and offer sufficient space for everyday use. In terms of price, they are more affordable compared to larger vehicles. Joint-venture brands typically price their small cars between 70,000 and 80,000 yuan, while independent brands usually fall around 50,000 yuan.
According to recent June sales data, the Polo sold over 1,600 units, making it the top-selling model. The Honda Fit, often referred to as the "GK5" by its fans, came in second with around 9,000 units sold. The third position was taken by the sedan-style Chevrolet Sail, which sold over 8,000 units monthly.
Interestingly, Chevrolet also offers a hatchback model called LeFeng RV, which is positioned more like an SUV and competes strongly in the European market. This model is specifically designed for the Chinese market.
The LeFeng RV features a hatchback design with a length of 4.2 meters, longer than the Polo, Fit, and Hyun. Its wheelbase measures 2,550 mm, surpassing that of the Polo and Fit. This gives it a clear advantage in terms of overall size, especially in trunk space.
Under the hood, the LeFeng RV is equipped with a 1.5L engine. The base model comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, while the other three variants feature an automatic 4AT transmission from Aisin. Although this transmission is somewhat outdated compared to the 6AT used in the Polo or the CVT found in the Fit and Hyun, it is still suitable for city driving.
In terms of features, the LeFeng RV is well-equipped. It comes standard with ESP, hill-start assist, and engine start-stop technology. Even the base model includes a sunroof, and the top trim level offers four airbags, a reversing camera, and tire pressure monitoring.
Despite its features, the LeFeng RV struggled in sales, with only 183 units sold in June—ranking near the bottom among joint-venture small cars.
One major drawback of the LeFeng RV is its unattractive design. While the body is longer, it appears bulky and lacks refinement. The interior also feels cheap and poorly designed, failing to match the aesthetic appeal of competitors like the Fit.
Priced between 74,900 and 99,900 yuan, the LeFeng RV is comparable to popular models such as the Fit. However, in terms of technology and design, it falls far behind. Additionally, Chevrolet's brand image has declined in recent years, no longer holding the same prestige as Toyota or Honda.
Currently, the LeFeng RV is heavily discounted, with the starting price dropping to around 60,000 yuan after discounts, and the top model priced above 80,000 yuan. However, even at these prices, the car struggles to attract buyers due to its weak brand presence and outdated design. In the Chinese market, brand reputation and appearance remain key factors in consumer decisions, and without them, it's difficult to compete effectively.
