How to Use the Shore Hardness Tester?

Instructions:

1. Portable Hardness Tester

Hold the hardness tester and press it firmly onto the sample until the base of the device is fully in contact with the surface. At this point, the reading on the dial represents the hardness value of the material. Ensure a stable measurement environment for improved accuracy. It's recommended to use the durometer on a fixed load measuring frame for consistent results.

For each test, take three readings at different points on the sample and calculate the average for better precision.

2. Bench Hardness Tester

Press the right handle to lower the platform until it makes full contact with the glass platen. The hardness tester should be set at 100 degrees. Place the sample on the platform, and the same measurement can be repeated. Make sure the device is properly aligned and stable during the process.

Terms and Conditions:

1. Before starting the measurement, ensure the pointer of the hardness tester is in the free position and aligned with the zero mark. If the pointer is not at zero, loosen the screw located in the upper right corner, adjust the dial, and realign it to the zero position. When pressing the device onto the glass plate, make sure the end of the pressure pin and the bottom of the foot are in full contact with the surface. The pointer should read 100 degrees. If it doesn't, press the needle a few times. If it still doesn’t return to zero, the device may not be usable. In such cases, it should be returned to the manufacturer for proper calibration. Adjustments must be done using specialized weights and verification tools, so it's best to send it back to the production unit if needed.

2. Rubber samples and test conditions must follow the standards GB581 and GB527. The thickness of the rubber sample should be at least 6mm, the width no less than 15mm, and the length no less than 35mm. If the thickness is less than 6mm, multiple layers can be stacked, but not more than four layers. Ensure the layers are parallel and aligned correctly.

3. For rubber hardness testing, the temperature should be between 18°C and 28°C. The sample must be stored at the test temperature for at least 5 hours before testing.

4. Plastic samples should follow the HG2—125—65 standard. The sample should be square with a side length of 50mm and a thickness of 6mm. Alternatively, a 50×15mm sample is also acceptable. The testing temperature for plastic should be 20°C ±2°C, and the sample must be kept at that temperature for at least 16 hours before testing.

5. The surface of both rubber and plastic samples must be smooth, flat, and free from defects, mechanical damage, or impurities.

6. After each use of the hardness tester, it is recommended to perform 10,000 presses left and right. According to GB531, it’s important to check the relationship between the spring pressure and the dial scale, as well as the shape and size of the needle tip to ensure accurate measurements.

7. After use, store the hardness tester in its case and keep it in a dry place to prevent moisture damage.

8. Clean the lifting shaft on the measuring stand and the bottom of the table regularly. Apply a small amount of anti-rust oil to prevent corrosion and extend the life of the equipment.
