In a recent development, eBay, the global cross-border e-commerce platform, has launched its "Leading the Future - eBay Emerging Technology Retail Cross-Border E-Commerce Export Industry Report." This report highlights how electronic products have long dominated China's cross-border retail exports. With the rapid advancement of emerging technologies, the global consumer market is witnessing significant growth. Among the top subcategories, 3D printing, virtual reality, and smart wearable devices are gaining immense popularity on the platform.
At the report launch, Zhengzhou Chang, General Manager of eBay China, delivered an insightful keynote speech. According to the report, five key subcategories stand out in terms of sales performance and market potential:
First, smart home devices. Products such as smart cameras, lighting systems, security equipment, and remote control units are among the best-selling items for Chinese sellers on eBay. The U.S., Canada, and the UK remain the top markets for these products, while Australia shows explosive growth with over 130% year-on-year increase. France, Italy, and Spain also saw more than 80% growth in sales.
Second, drones. China’s drone industry leads globally, thanks to innovation and brand recognition. The U.S. remains the largest and fastest-growing market for Chinese drone sellers, with sales surging by over 1500% YoY. Europe follows closely, with a 900% growth rate. Handheld, underwater, and multi-functional drones are expected to become major success stories.
Third, 3D printing. Applications of 3D printers are expanding into medical, automotive, and educational sectors. Sales of 3D printing products from Chinese sellers increased by over 100% last year. France, Italy, and Spain saw a 450% surge, while Germany became the second-largest market after the U.S., growing at over 100% annually.
Fourth, virtual reality (VR). VR hardware and content are now widely used in gaming, media, education, and healthcare. Chinese VR sellers on eBay saw over 300% YoY growth. The U.S. remains the largest market, with a 350% increase, followed by Canada and Australia.
Fifth, smart wearable devices. These include smartwatches, glasses, headphones, and fitness trackers. Sales of these products by Chinese sellers grew by more than 100% YoY. The U.S., UK, and Germany are the top markets, with France, Italy, and Spain showing over 150% growth, making them highly promising regions.
Ebay notes that technologies once limited to industrial use—like AI, VR, and drones—are now entering commercial and consumer spaces. This diversification is accelerating product innovation and driving industry upgrades. Younger generations, especially Gen Z and Millennials, are leading this shift, favoring online shopping and tech-driven products.
To capitalize on this trend, eBay announced three strategic initiatives:
First, strong R&D and innovation. Sellers must stay ahead of trends and understand consumer behavior. eBay provides data insights and market reports to help Chinese sellers make informed decisions.
Second, refined supply chain management. Efficient logistics are crucial for cross-border e-commerce. eBay partners with third-party platforms to offer overseas warehouse solutions, improving delivery speed and reliability for high-value electronics.
Third, building a strong brand image. A solid brand increases customer loyalty and conversion rates. eBay launched the “China Brand Intelligence Program†to support independent brands through dedicated marketing and visibility on the platform.
