The "Type 401" prototype, developed by Northrop Grumman's subsidiary "Proportional Composites," has recently sparked global interest in the aviation world. As the U.S. continues to push the boundaries of aerospace technology, new experimental aircraft are being tested to maintain its technological edge. Among these, the "Type 401" and a hypersonic drone from Lockheed Martin have been revealed, showcasing two major trends in American aircraft development: stealth capabilities and hypersonic speed.
According to reports from "Defense News," the "Type 401" prototype was unveiled by Proportional Composites, with the company stating that two units were built for undisclosed clients. The goal is to test advanced, fast, and cost-effective manufacturing techniques. The design features stealth characteristics, subsonic speed, high lift-to-drag ratio wings, and a rear air intake — all suggesting it’s more of a long-range reconnaissance or test platform. Its wings and tail resemble those of General Atomics' "Avenger" drone, hinting at shared design philosophies.
Meanwhile, a mysterious drone spotted near Lockheed Martin’s famed "Skunk Works" facility has raised questions. A scaled model of the future SR-72 hypersonic reconnaissance aircraft was reportedly seen inside the plant. Witnesses claimed the drone arrived at the site in late July, escorted by two T-38 jets. This has led experts to believe it could be a scale model used for testing the SR-72, which is intended to replace the aging U-2 spy plane.
Lockheed Martin has also announced progress on a combined-cycle engine that merges turbojet and ramjet technologies, allowing for sustained hypersonic flight. The SR-72 is expected to reach speeds over five times the speed of sound, making it significantly faster than its predecessor, the SR-71 Blackbird. Orlando Carvalho, an executive at Lockheed Martin, stated that hypersonic technology is as transformative as stealth, revolutionizing how aerial platforms operate.
Chinese aviation analysts suggest that while the "Type 401" doesn't break new ground in stealth design, the hypersonic project represents the next big leap. The integration of aerodynamics, propulsion, and control systems in the SR-72 is unprecedented, signaling a shift toward faster, more agile, and more capable aircraft in the future.
