According to recent reports, Ford is set to introduce a new voice-controlled driving assistant in vehicles equipped with the SYNC 3 infotainment system. This innovative device, mounted behind the steering wheel, will work in tandem with Sygic’s GPS navigation app, offering drivers a "voice-controlled co-pilot" that can identify nearby stops, hotels, and other points of interest. The feature can be activated by pressing a button on the steering wheel, making it easy and safe for drivers to use while keeping their eyes on the road.
Sygic, based in Bratislava, Slovakia, is the first GPS application company to partner with Ford. Its app is available on both iOS and Android platforms and is used in over 200 countries, supporting 40 languages and employing more than 150 people. The company claims to have over 150 million users on its GPS navigation platform and is working to include map data from every corner of the world, including China and Antarctica. One of its standout features is the ability to provide offline navigation, which gives it an edge over online services like Google Maps.
Sygic's mobile navigation app has now been integrated with Ford's SYNC 3 system, allowing users to mirror their phone screens onto the car’s infotainment display. In early 2017, Ford announced partnerships with Amazon, Samsung, and Sygic to develop SYNC 3 technology. The goal was to bring Sygic’s GPS navigation into the SYNC 3 touchscreen system, reducing driver distraction and enabling hands-free operation through voice recognition instead of smartphones.
This new driving assistant adds several useful functions, such as dictating traffic updates, parking suggestions, fuel prices, specific destinations, and even changing routes. It offers a level of convenience that could significantly enhance the driving experience.
If this sounds familiar, it might be because it resembles a car version of Alexa. Indeed, some automakers, including Ford, have already integrated Alexa into their vehicles. However, the current version of Alexa is primarily designed for home use and not directly tied to driving functions. Garmin also uses Alexa in its in-car components, but Sygic’s new integration focuses specifically on route guidance, which could be a key differentiator in the market.
Many drivers still depend heavily on their local mapping apps and navigation tools, which is why services like Android Auto and CarPlay are becoming increasingly popular. However, if a dedicated voice assistant makes the driving experience smoother and safer, it could become a valuable addition to modern vehicles.
