Promotion of Energy Efficiency of Electrical System to Academicians' Series of Events Successfully Held in Shougang Qiangang and Jiangsu Magnetic Valley

China's electric motor systems have a total installed capacity of approximately 2.1 billion kilowatts, consuming about 3.4 trillion kilowatt-hours annually, which accounts for 64% of the country's total electricity consumption. Of this, the industrial sector alone consumes around 75% of the power used by motors. Despite their critical role in China's energy system, motor efficiency is still 10-20 percentage points lower than international standards. To address this gap, improve energy efficiency, reduce outdated motor system energy use, and support industrial enterprises in achieving cost reduction and efficiency gains, the China Industrial Energy Conservation and Cleaner Production Association (CIECCPA) launched the "Energy Efficiency Improvement of Electric Motor Systems Entering Enterprises" initiative on March 13–16, 2018, under the guidance of the Department of Energy Conservation and Comprehensive Utilization of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This program aimed to bring together technical experts, industry leaders, and motor manufacturers to conduct on-site assessments and discussions with companies. By offering tailored solutions and professional optimization suggestions, the initiative fostered collaboration between technology providers, users, and developers, earning widespread recognition from participating enterprises. From March 13–14, a team of academicians and industry experts, including representatives from the Energy Conservation Department, Academician Gu Guoxuan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and officials from Jiangsu Suyi Group Co., Ltd., visited Beijing Shougang Qian’an Steel Company. They evaluated the application of energy-saving smart motors in areas such as secondary dust removal, water supply operations, and cold rolling production lines. The visit also included in-depth discussions on emerging technologies like permanent magnet motors and energy-saving innovations, attended by senior executives and technical staff from the company and relevant departments. Later, from May 15–16, another group of experts, including Mr. Liu Taiyong from the Jiangsu Economic and Information Committee, Academician Tang Renyuan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and representatives from Zhejiang Yongfa Electromechanical Co., Ltd., visited Jiangsu Magnetic Valley Technology Co., Ltd. They conducted on-site evaluations of motor speed control systems and engaged in detailed discussions on the development of winding permanent magnet drive products. The event was attended by key leadership from the company, highlighting the growing interest in advanced motor technologies. The Energy Conservation Department praised the Association’s efforts in organizing these academician-led activities, emphasizing their importance in driving innovation and improving energy efficiency. Under the context of supply-side reforms and the shift toward high-quality economic growth, the department called for greater collaboration between research institutions, government agencies, enterprises, and end-users to promote the widespread adoption of efficient motor technologies and accelerate China’s green industrial transformation.
