According to recent reports, Ford vehicles equipped with the SYNC 3 infotainment system will now feature a new voice-controlled driving assistant installed behind the steering wheel. This innovative tool works in tandem with Sygic’s GPS navigation app, offering drivers a "voice-controlled co-pilot" that can help identify nearby stops, hotels, and other points of interest. The function is activated by pressing a button on the steering wheel, allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road while receiving helpful information. With support for 24 languages, this system ensures users across the globe can access search results without distraction.
Sygic, based in Bratislava, Slovakia, is the first GPS application company to partner with Ford. Their app is available on both iOS and Android platforms and is used in over 200 countries. With 40 language options and more than 150 employees, Sygic has claimed over 150 million users worldwide. The company is also working on incorporating all global map data, including regions like China and Antarctica, to provide more comprehensive travel services. One of its standout features is the ability to offer offline navigation, which outperforms many online mapping services such as Google Maps.
Sygic’s mobile navigation app has been integrated with Ford’s SYNC 3 system, initially aiming to mirror smartphone content onto the car’s infotainment screen. In January 2017, Ford announced partnerships with Amazon, Samsung, and Sygic to advance research and development in SYNC 3 technology. The goal was to bring Sygic’s GPS navigation directly into the SYNC 3 touchscreen, minimizing driver distractions. By using voice recognition, drivers can avoid manually handling devices like smartphones while on the road.
This new driving assistant adds value by allowing drivers to request traffic updates, parking suggestions, fuel prices, specific destinations, and even change routes—all through voice commands. It’s designed to make driving safer and more convenient.
If this sounds similar to Amazon’s Alexa Smart Assistant, then it might be intentional. Some automakers, including Ford, have already integrated Alexa into their vehicles, but traditionally, it’s more focused on home automation rather than driving functions. Garmin, another well-known brand, has also introduced Alexa into its in-car systems, combining navigation with voice assistance. However, Sygic’s new feature is more focused on helping users get from point A to point B, making it more tailored for driving needs.
Many drivers still rely heavily on their preferred map apps and navigation tools, which is why services like Android Auto and CarPlay have become popular. But if this voice assistant proves to be intuitive and easy to use, it could become a valuable addition for drivers who want a more seamless in-car experience.
