In 2017, the air purifier market experienced a mixed year—starting with a surge in demand and product shortages due to widespread smog concerns. However, as government efforts to improve environmental conditions intensified, policies were rolled out across regions like Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, leading to significant improvements in air quality and a sharp decline in smog days. This shift had a noticeable impact on the market, which saw a slower growth rate compared to previous years.
According to the 2017 Home Power Grid Purchase Analysis Report jointly published by the CCID Research Institute and China Electronics News Agency, online sales of air purifiers rose by 12% year-on-year, reaching 3.74 million units, with total retail sales hitting 7 billion yuan—an 18% increase. Despite this growth, high-end models that once commanded premium prices saw reduced profit margins, and their sales did not experience a corresponding rise. Consumers became more discerning, prioritizing value over brand or price alone.
Many manufacturers improved efficiency by gaining better control over upstream supply chains, such as raw materials, which helped lower production costs. Additionally, the entry of internet-based brands disrupted traditional pricing structures, putting pressure on industry profits. As a result, the average profit margin for air purifiers declined across the board.
Looking at the price segments, the most popular range was between 2,000 and 3,499 yuan, accounting for nearly 70% of sales. Products priced between 1,000 and 1,999 yuan also showed strong growth, with a nearly 30% year-on-year increase, making up 10.28% of total sales. Meanwhile, the segment between 3,500 and 4,999 yuan accounted for 10.81%, growing by 12.1%. However, the higher-end categories—those priced above 5,000 yuan—saw a decline, with sales dropping by 25.2% in the 5,000–6,999 yuan range and only 4.7% of the market share for products over 7,000 yuan.
This data suggests that consumers are now more focused on cost-effective, high-performance models rather than luxury or premium options. The 1,000–1,999 yuan range is emerging as a key growth area, with major manufacturers likely to focus more on this segment in the future.
Despite these developments, the air purifier market still faces challenges. It remains highly dependent on weather conditions, with sales fluctuating based on smog levels. With ongoing environmental policies such as "coal-to-gas" and "coal-to-electricity," the number of smog days is expected to decrease further. Therefore, the industry must find new growth drivers to sustain long-term development.
