5G is set to revolutionize not just the mobile internet, but also enable a world where everything is connected and smart. In the near future, 5G will become a common feature in households across the globe. Huawei has taken a major step forward by launching its 5G chip and 5G CPE (Customer Premise Equipment), offering end-to-end 5G solutions that support the next generation of connectivity. According to recent announcements, Huawei plans to release its first 5G smartphones in 2019.
On February 25th, Beijing time, during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, Huawei's consumer business officially unveiled its first commercial 5G chip, the Balong 5G01, as well as the 5G CPE, marking a significant milestone in the development of 5G technology. This device is designed to bring high-speed 5G connectivity into homes and businesses.
As we know, the development of mobile communication begins with defining the 3GPP standards. Manufacturers then develop chips, networks, and terminals based on these standards. The release of Huawei’s 5G chip and CPE marks a key achievement, as it makes Huawei the first company to possess full 5G chip-terminal-network capabilities. This enables them to offer comprehensive 5G solutions to customers, accelerating the growth of the entire 5G industry. It also signals that 5G is no longer a distant dream, but something that will soon be accessible to millions of users worldwide.
Huawei's Balong 5G01 is the world's first commercial 5G chip based on the 3GPP standard. It supports both Sub-6GHz and mmWave frequency bands, allowing for theoretical download speeds of up to 2.3 Gbps. Additionally, it supports dual connectivity between 4G and 5G networks, as well as standalone 5G networking. This makes it one of the most advanced 5G chips available today.
Earlier last year, Qualcomm launched the first 5G baseband chip for mobile devices, the X50, which enabled connections on the 28GHz millimeter wave band and achieved gigabit internet speeds. Then, in November, Intel released its own 5G baseband chip, the XMM 8000 series, starting with the XMM 8060. With the launch of the Balong 5G01, Huawei became the third global manufacturer to produce commercial 5G baseband chips, following Qualcomm and Intel. More importantly, it marked the first time a Chinese company had entered the top tier of 5G chip development.
From the information available, both the Balong 5G01 and the Intel XMM 8060 support the latest 5G NR air interface, as well as the 28GHz and Sub-6GHz bands. They also allow for 4G/5G dual connectivity and are backward compatible with 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. This ensures a smooth transition to 5G while maintaining compatibility with existing infrastructure.
In contrast, the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 only supports the 28GHz band and initially focused solely on 5G networks. However, it can still work with the Opteron processor and the Snapdragon LTE baseband via dual connectivity, providing flexibility for early adopters.
The Huawei 5G CPE comes in two versions: low-frequency (Sub-6GHz) and high-frequency (mmWave). The low-frequency CPE weighs just 3kg and is compact enough to fit in any room. It can achieve peak downlink speeds of up to 2Gbps, which is 20 times faster than a 100Mbps fiber connection. This makes it ideal for supporting future applications such as AR/VR, 4K/8K video streaming, and high-performance online gaming, offering an immersive digital experience to consumers.
The high-frequency 5G CPE includes an outdoor unit (ODU) and an indoor unit (IDU), making it suitable for more demanding environments. Huawei has already partnered with over 30 global operators, including China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Vodafone, SoftBank, T-Mobile, BT, and Telefonica, to advance 5G deployment around the world.
Beyond just phones and modems, Huawei has announced a broader 5G terminal strategy for the future. This includes 5G smartphones, 5G CPEs, 5G mobile Wi-Fi routers, industrial modules, and even 5G car boxes. According to reports, Huawei's first 5G smartphone is expected to launch in 2019, marking a major step forward in the company's 5G journey.
