In 2017, the water purification equipment market was still experiencing a phase of growing demand, driven by the relatively low adoption rate of such products. Throughout the year, the overall market maintained a positive outlook, with a strong growth rate. According to the 2017 Home Power Grid Purchase Analysis Report jointly released by the CCID Research Institute and China Electronics News, online sales of water purification equipment reached 9.06 million units, representing a 22% year-on-year increase. The total value of these sales hit 7.1 billion yuan, marking a 30% rise compared to the previous year.

During this period, pure water machines dominated the online water purification market, capturing 76.5% of the market share. In contrast, water purifiers showed signs of stagnation, with their retail sales accounting for 18.33%, but they saw a slight decline of 1.12%. Meanwhile, sales of water softeners and central water purifiers increased marginally over the same period.
The market share for reverse osmosis (RO) products continued to grow, reaching 80.7% in terms of retail sales. On the other hand, ultrafiltration membrane products experienced a small decline, losing 1.15% of their market share. Pure water machines typically use RO technology, which offers higher filtration precision, effectively removing heavy metals, bacteria, and other impurities, making the purified water safe for direct consumption. This has made RO-based systems increasingly popular among consumers who are now prioritizing quality and health in their purchasing decisions.
In terms of pricing, the segment between 700 and 2,999 yuan remained the most popular among consumers. Specifically, products priced between 1,500 and 2,999 yuan accounted for 48.23% of sales, and this segment also showed the fastest growth. Meanwhile, the 700–1,499 yuan range had a 27.07% share, but it experienced the largest drop in sales, declining by 7.05%. This suggests that low-cost, low-efficiency products are gradually being phased out, accelerating industry consolidation.
Hu Chunmin, editor-in-chief of China Electronics News, noted that the water purification industry is still in its dividend period. Looking ahead, as national standards like "water purification efficiency and water efficiency rating" are implemented, the industry is expected to undergo another round of restructuring. High-end, professional water purification equipment is likely to see significant growth in the coming years.
