In a situation where an unskilled friend or family member needs help with a system or application, what would you do? Would you guide them over the phone, show them through a video call, or offer remote assistance? While many might assume that remote assistance is the most convenient and efficient choice, it's not always the easiest to set up — especially for those without technical knowledge.
Back in the Windows XP era, remote assistance was something most users couldn't even imagine. It required some level of network understanding and wasn’t really accessible to the average person. Even today, while Windows still includes a remote assistance feature, it's often overlooked in favor of third-party tools like TeamViewer or QQ.
Nowadays, many third-party apps come with built-in remote support features. For example, QQ allows users to control each other’s computers during a chat session, which can be very useful. However, these methods aren’t perfect — they often require both parties to install software, and performance can be affected by internet quality.
I recently checked the built-in features of Windows 10 and discovered that it actually has its own version of remote assistance. I found it more reliable and easier to use than some of the third-party options. To access it, press Win + Q to open the Cortana search box, then type “Quick Assistant†to find the Remote Assistance app.
Once launched, you’ll see two options: “Get Assistance†and “Provide Assistance.†Let’s look at the “Provide Assistance†option first. After clicking on it, you’ll need to log in with your Microsoft account. A 6-digit security code will then be generated.
The person needing help can then choose “Get Assistance†and enter this code. The two devices will connect via Microsoft’s secure servers, authenticate the connection, and allow you to take control of their computer to troubleshoot the issue.
I tried this method, and compared to QQ’s remote assistance, which sometimes failed or had delays, this one worked smoothly and efficiently. It’s a great built-in tool that many people might not be aware of. If you’re looking for a simple and secure way to assist someone remotely, Windows 10’s Quick Assist could be just what you need.
