OLED technology will soon dominate the display industry? Japan has almost no market

Although Apple has just suffered the first drop in revenue in 13 years, and the market value has evaporated 40 billion U.S. dollars overnight, for the time being it cannot shake its position in the industry. After signing the big screen of OLED mobile display screens with Samsung's release, the panel industry quickly captured the signal that OLED will dominate the display industry, accelerating the OLED production layout.

In fact, due to the advantages of high contrast, high color gamut, and high response speed of OLEDs, as well as the unique advantages of ultra-thin, low-power, and flexible manufacturing, the industry has long been considered as the next-generation display technology that subverts LCDs. However, due to the limitations of the industrial chain and the immature technology, OLEDs have not achieved large-scale promotion.

South Korea: OLED technology leader in the world Currently, only two Korean panel makers in the world have OLED panel mass production capabilities, among which LG Display monopolizes mass production of large-size OLED panels, and Samsung Display realizes small-to-medium size OLED panels for mobile phones and tablets. Mass production.

LG and Samsung have formed an industry monopoly in the large-size and small- and medium-size panels of OLEDs: LG has monopolized 70 to 80% of OLED display panel patents, and its WRGB OLED technology is mainly applied to high-end TVs. In 2015, LG Display’s OLEDs. The sales volume of TV panels is about 400,000, and this year's target is to sell 1 million units. Samsung belongs to another technology genre, RGB OLED. Samsung owns some patented technologies for small OLED display panels. In the organic smartphone organic screen market, Samsung Electronics has a 95% share, and Galaxy and iPhone use OLED screens. The plan confirms that OLED will become the mainstream of smart phone screens. In 2016, shipments of Samsung's small-size OLED panels will further increase.

Recently, foreign media reported that the two major display giants are launching in-depth competition of OLED screens: Samsung Electronics will be involved in the production of TV organic screens. At the "Samsung China Forum" in early March, the company first demonstrated commercial 55-inch transparent OLED TVs. , plans to increase the production line of large-size organic screens in the plant in Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea, in the third quarter of this year, and plans to invest nearly 3 billion U.S. dollars; and LG Electronics will erode the advantages of Samsung and increase the production of mobile phone screens. Last year, LG Electronics invested Nearly 1.5 billion US dollars, an additional OLED screen production line.

In the first quarter of this year, the "Made in South Korea" position in the large-size panel market began to be challenged. The overall market share of Korean companies is 38.8%, which lags behind 47.9% of the total number of companies in mainland China and Taiwan. South Korean manufacturers have encountered difficulties in quantitative competition and began to switch to high value-added panels. OLED is an important breakthrough.

Domestic: Staggering OLEDs upstream and downstream
Samsung, LG, two major South Korean giants continue to increase investment in OLED panel, no doubt will accelerate the promotion of OLED. From the domestic point of view, both television manufacturers and mobile phone manufacturers have foreseen the advanced layout of OLED technology. Although OLED has a high requirement for the integration of technical thresholds and upstream and downstream industrial chains, and the yield rate still needs to be improved, China will usher in the OLED outbreak in 2016.

Peng Jianfeng, secretary general of the China OLED Display Industry Alliance, said that at present, 12 small-size OLED panel lines have been built and planned in mainland China, and large-size OLED panel lines have also been included in the investment plans of BOE and Huaxing Optoelectronics. In terminal applications, 12 domestic brands of OLED mobile phones entered the market in 2015. At the same time, the large-size OLED TV with a size of 55 inches or more in the Chinese market last year has sold 16 models. It is estimated that the sales volume of domestic OLED TVs will reach 300,000 units in 2016.

The sales volume of 300,000 units is expected to remain relatively conservative. Skyworth stated that the sales target for Skyworth OLED TV in 2016 is 200,000 units. It is reported that 51 this year, Skyworth will invest 50 million for the promotion of OLED TVs, and Changhong will also 55-inch 2K OLED TV promotional price to 8,888 yuan, echoing Konka Internet sub-brand KKTV's OLED TV price strategy in early March. The substantial reduction in the price of OLED TVs also confirms that OLED has formed a large-scale positive storm.

With the advent of Skyworth, Konka, and Changhong in the OLED camp, and the emergence of more and more OLED intelligent terminal products, more and more panel makers are accelerating the construction of OLED production lines. The current level of technology and production capacity have been greatly improved. Great promotion. In addition to the 12 small OLED panel lines that have already been built, domestic large-screen OLED panels will also be launched this year. It is reported that BOE can achieve the supply of 55-inch OLED TV panels in the second half of this year, and Huaxing Optoelectronics is working on the printing display technology. If it succeeds, the cost of OLEDs will be greatly reduced in the future.

Japan: Although it is technically backward when hindsight is known, domestic companies are continuously reducing the gap with South Korea's panel companies for their sensitivity to OLED display technology. At this point, is there still a chance for Japanese panel makers who are attacked by both sides of China and Korea?

Nowadays, Japanese panel makers are obviously at a disadvantage. In recent years, Japanese panel makers' strategy is to focus on high-quality LCDs to expand their market share in small- and medium-size panels. Apple’s change of attitude toward OLEDs has stimulated them to strengthen their OLED panels. Layout.

In order to catch up with South Korea’s Samsung and LG’s advantages in OLEDs, Japan Display Company (JDI) has also purchased equipment for OLED panel production lines, adding research and development work on OLEDs, and a trial production line in Ishikawa Prefecture will be completed. , plan to start production in 2018. However, JDI currently does not have mass production performance of OLED panels, and it still belongs to the R&D stage: Its 4.5-generation line at Ishikawa Plant has only 4,000 pieces of production capacity in January. The Maoyuan curved OLED panel production line in the R&D stage was the earliest in the first quarter of 2017. Can only be activated, and the scale of production capacity is much lower than Samsung, LGD, trying to catch up with South Korea has been a big leader in running ahead is not an easy thing.

Sharp, known as the "Father of the LCD Panel," has a pivotal position in the display panel industry in Japan, but in recent years, Sharp's financial report has been deteriorating, and it has repeatedly suffered huge losses. It was finally acquired by Hon Hai in March this year. OLED panels were positioned by Hon Hai as the backbone of Sharp's reconstruction and invested 200 billion yen in OLED panels. They expect to chase after South Korean manufacturers such as Samsung by large-scale investment. Hon Hai and Sharp plan to achieve mass production of OLEDs in 2018, but neither Hon Hai nor Sharp have actual mass production experience of OLED panels, and the operational crisis has led to the loss of Sharp's proficient OLED technicians. Therefore, it is very difficult to develop OLED mass production technology. "High", analysts believe that the OLED panel production period may fall after 2020.

On the way to the panel makers' spring time, Japanese panel makers seem to have taken the last train, and it is critical to realize the mass production of OLED panels. In the field of OLED panels led by Korean manufacturers, the coordinated operations of the Chinese panel industry have been catching up. The establishment of an OLED mass production line in the shortest time is the last chance for the Japanese panel. Although many people are reluctant to accept this fact, the era of display industry OLED has come.
