MILPITAS, CA – December 11, 2013 – Linear Technology Corporation introduces the IO-Link master IC LTC2874, which integrates one to four remote IO- Link device (slave device) power supply and communication interface. A rugged interface and rich feature set make the LTC2874 ideal for larger systems that implement the IO-Link (IEC61131-9) standard in harsh industrial environments. Each master controller IC can control 4 slave devices, LTC2874 reduces the circuit board space, reduces complexity and cost, while improving reliability.
The unique features of the LTC2874 include the generation of an automatic wake-up request (WURQ) and an ability to boost the output power supply current from the device. The WURQ generator can generate a self-timed wake-up pulse with the correct polarity, thereby reducing the need for a microcontroller. The security mechanism is responsible for managing multiple ports and repeating WURQ to prevent thermal overload and maintain error-free communication. The current boost pulse generator fully implements the start current pulse requirements added to the IO-Link v1.1.1 specification.
LTC2874 adds robustness and reliability to the physical interface specified by the IO-Link standard. The built-in hot swap (Hot Swap?) Controller and the external N-channel MOSFET at the power interface can protect the connected device from inrush current during startup and fault conditions. The integrated ± 50V blocking diode in the data line interface prevents faults and high voltage offsets, making it ideal for driving harsh PLC environments up to 20m of cable. The data line can withstand ± 8kV HBM ESD without latch-up or damage, and all other pins are also protected under ± 6kV HBM conditions. The SPI interface allows the host to configure and monitor a variety of parameters, including input power supply voltage, output power good state, and fault events. Programmable control of hot-swap current limit foldback, Circuit Breaker timers, noise suppression filters, and current sinking can add flexibility to communication and fault handling in different systems.
LTC2874 also has other functions, making it suitable for a variety of applications. The operating voltage of 8V to 30V can support traditional standard I / O (SIO) mode and other industrial applications. The driver output can be connected in parallel to achieve the 4x driving capability required by IO-Link. The signal pins are compatible with IEC 61131-2 Type 2 and Type 3 digital I / O. The cable sensing function can ensure that the power output is only turned on after the cable is connected, allowing hot plugging without sparks, otherwise it will shorten the life of the connector.
The LTC2874 supports an industrial-grade operating temperature range of –40oC to 85oC, and is available in a RoHS-compliant 5mm x 7mm QFN package and TSSOP package. The LTC2874 1000-piece batch is priced at US $ 7.94 per piece, and is now available for volume production. LTC2874 complements the LT3669 IO-Link device (slave) PHY interface.
