Philips plans to invest 1.2 million euros to build 100 solar-powered LED lighting centers in rural African communities, each with a small football field size to solve the problem of no electric lighting in rural Africa.
The event was launched at Philips' third annual Cairo-Cape Town roadshow, and Philips announced that it will use innovative technologies to try to solve some of Africa's key issues, thereby improving part of everyday life. The "LED Light Center" will be located near the school in the sunset area around 7pm to help promote local economic and social activities as well as improve health care and education. Four 5-meter-high solar-powered LED lighting settings will be set around the LED light center. The lamp consumes less than 60 watts of power and provides 20 lux of cool white light. The entire setting is enough to illuminate a thousand square meters.
Local authorities are responsible for maintenance costs, and the authorities can rely on potential advertisers and merchants in the optical center to pay for these. These costs may be used to support underground battery systems for solar panels, which typically last four to five years.

It is reported that the project is part of Philips' response to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's proposal "I hope to achieve universal access to modern energy services by 2030" and Philips' commitment to providing a broader sustainable energy source. The initiative has been strongly encouraged by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.
