On December 22nd, the 4th National Congress of the Chinese Opera Performance Association and the first Chinese Opera Performance Art event were held in Anqing, hosted by the Chinese Opera Performance Society and the People's Government of Yixiu District. During the forum, the Deputy Director of the New Media Department of China’s Intercontinental Communication Center delivered a keynote speech titled “VR + Drama: New Media Helps Traditional Culture Go Global.” In his address, he highlighted the role of new media and technology in promoting Chinese culture internationally. He explained that VR has become a powerful tool, especially in overseas outreach efforts, where it has captured public interest and created immersive experiences. He also discussed the evolution of VR technology, noting that while it is not a new concept, it gained significant traction from 2014 onward due to advancements in hardware and growing demand for interactive content. He pointed out that VR has the potential to revolutionize various industries, including education, entertainment, and even manufacturing. When it comes to VR + opera, he emphasized the natural compatibility between the two. Both involve creating immersive, simulated environments that tell stories. This synergy opens up opportunities for virtual reality theaters, VR-based opera education, and digital preservation of traditional art forms. The speaker also outlined strategies for effective communication through VR, dividing VR + opera into two categories: shallow experiences for broad dissemination and deep experiences for cultural immersion. He noted that while high-end VR systems offer superior immersion, they are still expensive and not widely accessible. On the other hand, mobile VR offers an affordable and scalable solution for mass adoption. The summit attracted a wide range of participants, including officials from the Ministry of Culture, local government representatives, scholars from Tsinghua University, and leading figures in the VR industry. Over 50 theater professionals attended, contributing their insights on the future of drama and VR. Additionally, 14 renowned opera masters performed a special show in Anqing, highlighting the enduring passion for traditional arts.
