Amazon and Microsoft work together to create a new world of AI, but Google is being squeezed out

Amazon and Microsoft, long-standing rivals in the tech industry, have recently found common ground in a surprising partnership. The saying "no permanent friends, no eternal enemies" holds especially true in the business world. According to recent reports, the two giants have joined forces to advance AI development, leaving Google, once a dominant force, on the sidelines. This marks the second major collaboration between Amazon and Microsoft in recent months, further highlighting their growing synergy in the AI space. The partnership aims to make it easier for developers to work with open-source AI technologies. In addition to previous collaborations, such as integrating Alexa and Cortana across platforms, the latest effort involves a new set of tools designed to streamline AI development. A recent image shared by the companies shows the collaboration between Amazon and Microsoft in building a new AI ecosystem, while Google appears to be increasingly marginalized. The image features Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, emphasizing the strategic importance of this alliance. On Thursday, the two companies launched several new tools to help developers more easily use open-source AI software. These tools include Gluon, a Python-based API that simplifies working with AI frameworks like MXNet (supported by Amazon AWS) and Microsoft's CogniTIve Toolkit. Soon, Gluon will support even more frameworks, with technical details being made public to encourage broader adoption. Google has long been a leader in open-source AI with TensorFlow, introduced in 2015. It has gained widespread popularity among researchers and remains far ahead of other frameworks like CogniTIve Toolkit and MXNet. However, Google has not yet joined the Gluon initiative. Developers who prefer TensorFlow can still use Keras, Google’s Python API, for their projects. In a similar move, Apple recently launched Core ML, a platform designed to help developers integrate AI into iOS apps more efficiently. Apple also provided tools to convert models from other frameworks into Core ML format, further expanding its reach in the AI space. Eric Boyd, Vice President of AI at Microsoft, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in driving innovation. “We believe it is important for the industry to invest resources in building technologies that benefit the wider community,” he said. “That’s why Microsoft and Amazon AWS teamed up to develop Gluon.” As competition in the AI space intensifies, partnerships like these are becoming more critical. With Amazon and Microsoft joining forces, the landscape of AI development is shifting, and the role of Google in this evolving ecosystem remains to be seen.
