Router enters 100G era

With the rapid development of the Internet and the comprehensive IP of the network, the field of routers is undergoing profound changes: 100G platform routers have become mainstream, the size of router clusters has rapidly expanded, the market structure of equipment companies has been shuffled, and the launch of 400G router platforms ... The relentless pursuit of large capacity and faster speed has become the driving force of technological innovation in the core router market.

100G first year of application

2012 is the first year of the application of 100G platform routers. After rigorous centralized procurement tests and commercial trials in 2011, operators have chosen to start commercializing larger-capacity 100G platform routers in 2012 to increase network capacity.

In China Telecom, 100G platforms are all used in the new 163 backbone network market; the proportion of 100G platform routers in the new market of the metropolitan area network has reached 45%, which was zero in the previous year.

In China Unicom, the upcoming 169 backbone network new construction project will also use 100G platform routers, and the metropolitan area network new market will adopt 100G platform routers on a large scale. In addition, China Unicom has also upgraded dozens of routers on the current network to 100G clusters to meet future capacity growth needs.

At China Mobile, the CMNET backbone network selected a 100G platform router to replace some old equipment on the existing network, and the proportion of 100G platform routers in the new market also reached 100%.

From the perspective of the industry chain as a whole, 100GE ports are also fully mature. The three major domestic operators have completed strict 100G long-distance transmission interoperability tests, marking the backbone network entering the era of 100G speed.

From the perspective of equipment development trends and operators 'selection attitudes, 100G routers will account for more than 90% of the new core router market in 2013. Existing network manufacturers' 40G platform routers will be upgraded to 100G platforms on a large scale. The two major manufacturers Both Huawei and Cisco can support smooth upgrades across platforms.

The size of the cluster is expanding rapidly

The rapid growth of business traffic has put forward higher requirements for the network capacity of operators, and has also promoted the continuous increase of the size of the equipment cluster of each node of the network.

In 2012, China Telecom chose to significantly expand the 163 backbone network, with a capacity increase of 51%, and selected Cisco and Huawei to pilot 100G "2 + 4" clusters in Shaanxi and Jiangsu respectively and achieved success. At the same time, China Telecom is also actively piloting an end-to-end 100GE solution to make technical preparations for the application of router 100GE interfaces in 2013. A relevant person told reporters that China Telecom has deployed more than 220 sets of cluster routers with more than two frames, of which there are more than 90 sets of clusters with more than 4 frames, and the maximum cluster size has reached 5 frames.

In addition, the reporter was informed that China Unicom has planned to significantly expand the 169 backbone network, and it is expected that the capacity increase will reach about 50%. Due to the difference in architecture between the 169 backbone network and the telecommunications 163 backbone network, the core nodes are more concentrated than the telecommunications companies. The cluster size of the super core nodes on the existing network has reached 7 boxes, and will soon reach 8 boxes, which has reached the upper limit of the 2 + X cluster mode. Up to now, China Unicom has deployed more than 190 sets of cluster routers with more than two frames, including 36 sets of clusters with more than 4 frames, and the largest node cluster size has reached 7 frames.

China Mobile has also begun to actively deploy clustered routers, replacing non-cluster routers on the current network one after another, to prepare for network capacity reserves for the surge in traffic in the future LTE era. Up to now, China Mobile has deployed more than 30 cluster routers with more than two frames, and the maximum cluster size has reached 3 frames.

Domestic market pattern reshuffle

As the industry generally predicts that the 100G platform router will be the mainstream application platform from 2013 to 2015, the three major cluster router manufacturers Cisco, Huawei, and Juniper launched a fierce market competition in 2012. Statistics show that in the major centralized procurement projects of the three major operators in 2012, Huawei won the largest share of the new market for core routers, Cisco won a small number of new orders for China Telecom's 40G platform routers at the beginning of the year, and Juniper has no revenue in the new market.

Although Cisco did not perform well in the new market, it relied on its huge existing network market to still obtain the largest share of expansion contracts, ranking first in the overall market with a 50% market share, followed by Huawei, and Juniper's market share year after year. Reduced, the pattern of Cisco's exclusive monopoly of the mobile CMNET backbone network has also been broken in 2012, and its market share may shrink further.

From the current market structure, Huawei's rise in the core router field is quite rapid. An analyst who has followed Huawei for a long time told reporters that in recent years Huawei has accumulated rich experience in product and software research and development, has completed the process from quantitative change to qualitative change, and will challenge Cisco on the 100G platform. According to the reporter, in the centralized procurement test organized by some operators, the Huawei cluster router NE5000E performed well, and its key test indicators exceeded Cisco.

Foresee 400G

In 2012, various equipment manufacturers have also released new products in the post-100G era. From the current perspective, the single-slot capacity of the industry's next-generation cluster router products will reach 400G.

Aran launched a new 7950 XRS series core router, ready to enter the core router market. 7950 XRS router single slot can provide interface bandwidth 400G. Cisco is also expected to launch a 400G CRS cluster by the end of 2013.

Huawei took the lead in releasing the NE5000E 480G router platform at the IP GALA and Beijing Communications Exhibition in September 2012, supporting high-density 100GE and 40G ports, using Solar3.0 series chips and VRP8.0 software platform, which can be smoothed later Realize 1T forwarding capability in a single slot.

It is worth mentioning that the above three platforms will support back-to-back cluster technology. This technology was first proposed by Huawei in 2006 and commercialized on the 40G platform. Because no expensive central optical switching components are required, back-to-back clustering greatly reduces the cost of two-frame clusters. In recent years, it has been favored by operators and began to be used on a large scale. Especially in the 400G era, the advantages of back-to-back clusters such as cost savings and space are more obvious, and will become the mainstream cluster technology.

With the maturity of 400G related technology products, some operator experts predict that the next 2 to 3 years will become the window period for 400G commercial use. The core router will become the focus of the future router market.
