International Rectifier (IR) has introduced the IRAUDAMP4 reference design for Class D audio power amplifiers. Compared to typical circuit designs, the new reference design helps designers save 50% PCB footprint for medium to high power amplifiers in all medium voltage ranges for home theater applications, professional amplifiers, musical instruments and automotive entertainment systems.

The IRAUDAMP4 reference design, in conjunction with IR's 200V digital audio driver IC IRS20955 and IRF6645 DirectFET digital audio MOSFET, is a 2-channel, 120W half-bridge design that achieves 96% efficiency at 120W and 4Ω. The design also incorporates a variety of key protection features including overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, undervoltage protection, DC protection, and overtemperature protection. The new design also provides management features such as a +/- 5V supply for preamplifier emulation signal processing and a +12V supply (Vcc) for the Class B gate drive stage. This 2-channel design expands the power and number of channels without the need for a heat sink under normal operating conditions.

The new reference design is based on the IRS20955(S)(TR) PbF audio driver IC design with a floating PWM input specifically designed for Class D audio amplifier applications. Its bidirectional current sensing monitors overcurrent conditions under positive and negative load current conditions without the need for an external shunt resistor. The built-in protection control module provides a safety program for overcurrent conditions and a programmable reset timer. The built-in dead time generation module helps with precise gate switching, and the optimal dead time setting provides better audio performance, such as lower total harmonic distortion (THD) and lower audio background noise.

The IRF6645 power MOSFET used in conjunction with the new reference design is a member of the IR DirectFET family. The innovative DirectFET package technology enhances the performance of Class D audio amplifier circuits by reducing lead inductance, improving switching performance, and reducing EMI noise. Its high thermal efficiency contributes to 120W operation at 4Ω impedance, plus the need for a heat sink, which not only reduces the size of the circuit, but also provides greater flexibility in line layout while reducing overall amplifier system cost. .

IRAUDAMP4 is available now.
